Followed by Afternoon Tea in the dining room. A selection of savoury and sweet treats including authentic local tea-time recipes of the Edwardian period and fruits and vegetables grown in our walled kitchen garden. (Gluten free and vegan options available on booking)

Afternoon Tea 3.30-5.00pm

You are welcome to take a contemplative walk in the gardens and grounds of
Ashley Court from 1.30pm onwards.

Event Details

Hilary Boxer studied cello performance at the Guildhall School of music with Stefan Popov and Christopher Bunting. She and her pianist, were duo prize winners and Hilary went on to freelance with London ensembles such as Ballet Rambert and also with the Scottish National Orchestra. Since moving to the South West, Hilary plays frequently as a professional chamber musician and orchestral player. She has founded, managed and promoted many different chamber ensembles in partnership with South West friends and musicians. These include Hilary’s current role in the Clifton Quartet, Trio Exe and with guitarist David Cottam. Hilary teaches privately, and also at Blundells, Tiverton and Wellington, Somerset. She tutors the Somerset Youth Orchestra cellos and has a broad experience of teaching curriculum music in primary and secondary schools, most recently at Heathfield Community College, Taunton. She conceived, created and continues to direct the Kentisbeare Children’s Orchestra.

Helen Evans is a Devon-based poet, editor and creative writing tutor. Her debut pamphlet, Only by Flying, was published by HappenStance Press, and shortlisted for the Callum Macdonald Memorial Award. Her work has been widely published in poetry magazines, including The Rialto, Magma, and The North. Helen has a master’s degree with distinction in creative writing from the University of St Andrews. In 2021, her poem That Angel Hovering was joint winner of the Manchester Cathedral 600 Poetry Competition. She has read, with friends or solo, across the UK, including at Bodmin Moor Poetry Festival, Ledbury Poetry Festival and the National Library of Scotland in Edinburgh. She founded and facilitates Inner Room, a project from the Parish of Central Exeter that creates space for people to be creative. Helen is launching a personal venture, Poems for the Path Ahead, with workshops, readings and retreats in 2024.

Driving Directions
From Tiverton take the A396 signposted Bickleigh. After approx. 1 mile turn right at the small sign to Ashley and then immediately to your left, you will see the small white gatekeepers Lodge under the big oak at the bottom of the drive. From Exeter take the A396 to Tiverton. Turn left at the small sign to Ashley and then immediately left again, you will see the gatekeeper’s lodge under the big oak at the bottom of the drive. The house is at the top of the rather potholed 200 metre driveway. (Do not head on up Ashley Back Lane to the right of the cottage where the SatNav might try to send you!)
