An Introduction to Scything with Andy Rickard – national ladies scything champion

Scything, the manual agricultural practice of cutting grass, fodder, and crops with a long-curved blade, dates back to Neolithic times (c. 7000 BC), becoming widespread for haymaking during the European Middle Ages. It replaced the smaller sickle, boosting efficiency before being largely superseded by horse-drawn, then tractor-powered, machinery in the 19th-20th centuries. In the 21st century, the scythe has experienced a revival as a quiet, environmentally friendly, and efficient alternative to petrol-powered strimmers and mowers.

Learn how to scythe, or hone your scything skills, with a day of scything with Andi Rickard, the national ladies scything champion 2010-2015.
